In Memoriam: Paul Helm (1940–2025)

From the Tyndale Fellowship Trustees:

Paul Helm first came into our company many years ago (in the 1980’s) when Prof. Stephen Williams invited him to act as an External Examiner in the Faculty of Theology at Union Theological College in Belfast. He fulfilled this role graciously, fairly and firmly over several years, so that each time, we began to look forward to his visit as an opportunity to sit with one of the great Christian philosophers of our time.

Occasionally his commitment would require an over-night stay, when in the evening he would freely chat with us about current theological/philosophical issues. It was then that we discovered the true stature of the man along with all the other virtues so beautifully described in many of the tributes ascribed to him at this time. The highlight for many of us was when Paul made us aware of the philosophy of religion group which met as part of the Tyndale Fellowship at

Cambridge. For years, while sitting under his Chairmanship and listening to his comments we gained a wealth of philosophical understanding which hopefully fed through to our own students. Therefore, it is no exaggeration that the influence of Paul Helm upon Christian literature, in philosophical thinking and among the community of believers everywhere has surpassed our greatest imagination. The serious loss of such a great man with a great mind will become widely apparent when ‘Helm’s Deep’ is no more. Paul’s monthly column, posted on the web often around five in the morning, is where he would give a response to some current debate in a truly biblical manner.

Tribute by Reverend Dr Harold Cunningham (Secretary of the Study Group in Philosophy of Religion when Paul Helm was Chair) and others.
