Call for Papers 2026
The Biblical Theology Study Group will this summer meet to focus on the topic: ‘Sacrifices and Offerings’.
The topic of sacrifices and offerings runs throughout the Bible. It begins with the offerings of Cain and Abel, Noah’s sacrifice on an altar after the flood, and Abraham’s near sacrifice of Isaac. Exodus draws attention to the Passover sacrifice to the Lord, and Leviticus 1-7 sets out a range of different offerings that are linked to the appointment of the Levitical priesthood. Elsewhere in the Old Testament, we encounter both the uses of sacrifices by prophets and prophetic condemnation of sacrificial practices. In the New Testament, much is said about Jesus Christ’s sacrificial death as the Lamb of God. And the concept of sacrifice is used by Paul to describe how the followers of Jesus should offer themselves in daily service to God. Scholarly discussion of sacrifices and offerings raises all kinds of issues regarding the nature and purpose of sacrifices. Much of the debate over sacrifices has centred on Leviticus. Building on this, there is continued debate regarding how the Old Testament sacrifices relate to our understanding of Jesus Christ’s work of atonement. Is Christ’s death to be viewed in terms of substitutionary atonement or is it about moral influence? From a Biblical Theology perspective, there is much to discuss.
We welcome papers that address this topic from various viewpoints, ranging from specific examples to the broader concept itself. Offers of papers should be sent to Dr Paul Twiss at ptwiss@tms.edu. To facilitate planning, it would be helpful to receive offers of papers by 19 December 2025.
